rock n roll, geography style

A few weekends ago, I suggested that there has never been a rock n roll band named after a specific geographical location that has ever been any good. Gina Myers and Andy Mister considered this statement and seemed to agree. Can you refute this suggestion? For clarity, I'm thinking of: Asia, Chicago, Europe, &tc. Mentioning these bands makes me think of that wonderful scene in Hedwig..."travel exhausts me..." Boston has some merit, but really they are pretty lousy too. We determined a band like MC5 doesn't qualify because it isn't a specific geographical location. If you can convince me that this statement is incorrect, I'll send you something.

& speaking of Hedwig, my favorite song from the movie:

I don't remember what China Crisis sounded like, but I bet they sucked. Of Montreal and Vermont suck too.

The Motor City isn't specific?

Hey, Calexico don't suck. Nor do Portishead!

What abt The E Street Band? Is that too specific?
Isn't Sleater-Kinney a place? They were great. Ohio Players, too, sort of.

In support of yr observation, does Dakota count, given that they had neither northern nor southern distinction? Is Black Oak, AK a place? There's also the Asbury Dukes, Linkin Park, Alabama, Europe, & Cypress Hill.

Wow. This is impressive.

Logan,
You are right. I'll send you a copy of a broadside I made for a Andrew Mister/Jess Mynes reading. I'll also include other suprise gifts.

AT,
I guess I'm using specific in terms of "official"...whatever that means. Lazy descriptors on my part. Had no idea that Calexico and Portishead were places. Shows how terrible my geography is. So you'll get a surprise gift too, a Rothko poem broadside.

Tony,
I have a soft spot from those bands too. I'll send you something for playing. A signed Mister-Mynes broadside.

Zach,
Yeah I think bands named after street names are too specific. Dakota would qualify, but not the others. I'll send you something for playing. I'll include Asterisk 2 with your Asterisk 1 order.

Yeah, personally I was thinking one word city/state/country/continent names a la Chicago, Boston, America, therefore disqualifying bands like the MC5 and Bay City Rollers, etc. I think the being "good" requirement would eliminate Linkin Park.....

G.: point taken; I got carried away w/the concept & shd've been clearer abt Linkin Park, et al. not being good.

J.: Thanks! Looking fwd to the Asterisks. I think someone shd make 'More John Phillips poems, please' shirts; the back shd say 'Not Papa John Phillips' just to make the wearer's position clear.
